EXERCISE
By ph2sical activity we mean any bodily movement produced by skeletal muscles that
results in energy use. It includes activities undertaken as part of daily life (e.g.
work and walking), as well as activities such as exercise and sports. Studies now
show that a sedentary lifestyle is detrimental to health.
However, there are great
benefits derived from a progression from no physical activity to even relatively
low levels of physical activity. These benefits can also be looked at in terms of
living longer, reduced mortality and morbidity, physical and psychological well-being,
and social aspects (such as the ability to keep mobile and independent in old age).1
Recent guidelines emphasize 30 min of moderate intensity (equivalent to brisk walking)
activity on at least 5 days a week, and so, a shift from the previous guidelines,
which emphasized more rigorous programmes.
